Job description

About ScholarshipOwl

ScholarshipOwl is the largest scholarship marketplace in the US, using AI to connect 14 million students who are looking for scholarships with companies that are looking for students. Our mission is to make education financing more accessible and engaging, while giving brands a way to connect with the next generation.

We’re powered by AI technology that simplifies scholarship discovery, streamlines the application process, and delivers measurable results for both students and partners. Whether it’s helping students secure funding or enabling brands to run impactful campaigns, we’re reshaping how education is funded — and discovered.

The Role

We’re looking for an Engineering Team Lead to act as the technical and operational linchpin between product, design, engineering, and B2B sales. This is a high-impact leadership position where you will guide your team through the architecture, implementation, and delivery across a diverse portfolio of scholarship management and AI-driven platforms.

You will serve as the primary Point of Contact (POC) for 8 core projects, ensuring high-quality code, seamless cross-functional team coordination, and the successful execution of critical sales workflows. If you are an empathetic, highly technical leader who thrives on mentoring engineers, bridging the gap between code and commercial goals, and fearlessly leveraging AI to push boundaries, this is the role for you.

What You’ll Do

  • Hands-On Technical Leadership: Drive technical execution by participating in daily stand-ups, conducting thorough multi-stack code reviews, and leading technical/product workshops.

  • Bridge Tech & Sales: Act as the primary technical POC for all B2B/GTM projects. Manage daily communication with sales and campaign managers, proactively identifying and solving sales team pain points without losing sight of engineering capacity.

  • Lead the Agile Rhythms: Seamlessly integrate into our weekly Scrum flow. Lead Agile ceremonies (Sprint Planning, Retro, Review, Backlog Grooming), conduct Team 1:1s, participate in Weekly Sales calls, and represent your pod in the Team Leads L10 Dev calls.

  • Champion AI Integration: Lead the development and experimentation of AI agent workflows. Bring a fresh, innovative vision to the team by seamlessly blending new AI techniques into our existing architecture.

  • Monitor System Health & Operations: Take full ownership of daily operations, monitoring system health and lead deliveries via rigorous data analysis and querying (MySQL/BigQuery).

Job requirements

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 5+ years of software engineering experience, coupled with 3+ years of proven leadership specifically as a Technical Team Lead or Engineering Manager.

  • Cloud & Backend Mastery: Strong backend architecture foundations with extensive GCP experience (Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, Datastore) and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab, Cloud Build).

  • Data Proficiency: Excellent database querying skills, specifically with MySQL and BigQuery.

  • AI Fluency: Solid understanding of AI Agent orchestration (LLMs, Python). Note: AI fluency is a core cultural pillar here; you must already use LLMs heavily in your daily workflow and be fearless about experimenting with new tech.

  • Cross-Functional Empathy: Exceptional communication skills. You must be able to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical teams (like Sales) with high empathy and reliability. You should be someone who values and respects non-technical stakeholders.

  • Operational Agility: Extreme comfort with context-switching, managing urgent ad-hoc requests alongside planned sprints, and creative problem-solving.

Bonus Skills:

  • Deep expertise in PHP/Laravel, Nuxt 2/3/4, Vue.js, or FastAPI.

  • Advanced Kubernetes/Helm experience.

  • Background in B2B SaaS, EdTech (Scholarships), or MarTech/CRM integrations.

  • CS/Engineering degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience joining and scaling established, high-performing teams.
